Iowa Promise Walk guest speaker wins Mrs. Iowa title!

June 12, 2010

Update:   Mrs. Iowa will be on OPRAH on July 12th….be sure to watch!   http://www.omaha.com/article/20100628/NEWS01/706289929

Christine Streets, preeclampsia survivor, spoke about her pregnancy experience at the Davenport, Iowa walk on May 8th and was recently crowned the new Mrs. Iowa (Congratulations Christine!).   Christine competed in the state competition and won, earning her the chance to compete for the national title of Mrs. United States on July 21st and 22nd in Las Vegas.   What does this title have to do with preeclampsia and the Promise Walk?

Fittingly, Christine’s platform is speaking about preeclampsia and HELLP (Hemolysis – Elevated Liver enzymes – Low Platelet count).  Christine delivered her daughter, Delaney, at 27 weeks.  Five doctors and at least 12 nurses were present during the delivery, because the outcome was so uncertain for both mother and child.  Delaney Streets, who was due on May 21, came into the world on March 11.  She weighed 2 pounds, 5 ounces and was 15 inches long.  While Mom stayed in the hospital for two and a half weeks, Delaney didn’t leave for 60 days.  Delaney is now a happy 2-year-old.

Christine plans to use the July competition as an opportunity to share her story, and educate many more people about preeclampsia.  Her commitment to make a difference also led her to become involved in last month’s Davenport Promise Walk.   “I won this title for ALL of us,” Streets says.  “I am hoping this can open a few more doors and educate more people.  I don’t feel alone in my quest to save lives, to educate. I have no doubt that I have angels helping me along this journey.”

Good luck in your next competition, Christine!    We will be cheering you on from near and far across the country.

P.S.  I hear she might be talking to Oprah as well and will blog about her appearance when it happens….so exciting!
