A Dear Friend Lost and Another Walk is Born

April 19, 2011

Many Promise Walk coordinators come to the Preeclampsia Foundation as mommies struggling to make sense of the tragedy or near-miss they experienced in a recent pregnancy.  Our Ames, Iowa coordinators come from a very different place.  Abby Hausmann-Virgil and Minda Gerst started their walk after their dear friend, Shelly Warner Bridgewater, lost her life to preeclampsia.  Shelly was just 24 years old and died a week after giving birth.

Their inaugural walk in 2010 raised around $9000 with over 100 in attendance.  This year they hope to break $10,000 with even more walker participation and hopefully the assistance of the local media to deliver the registration drive message as well help make viewers aware of preeclampsia and its symptoms.

In keeping with last year, the Ames, Iowa Promise Walk will once again have free breakfast for their participants, goody bags and door prizes.  They are also hoping to come up with a few more tricks up their sleeves this year in order to make the walk an even bigger success.

Abby and Minda found that the walk has been a way for them to work through their grief while giving back to their community.  When asked what Shelly might think of the walk, Abby had this to say, “Shelly was a sunshiny person and this is something she would really enjoy.”

The Ames, Iowa Promise Walk is set for Saturday, May 21st and registration is open at http://www.promisewalk.org/pfpw/fundevent.asp?nnaffundid=10.  Get those magenta feet moving!
