Mission Monday: Taylor Family Honors Hailee’s Legacy

March 17, 2014

Mission Family Monday is when we take the opportunity to spotlight the real stories of families affected by preeclampsia, who have chosen to share that story in their local community to raise awareness of this cause. These individuals shine a spotlight on the work that the Preeclampsia Foundation supporters do through the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. Please feel free to share this story in your own community!

Michelle and Matt Taylor were anxiously awaiting the birth of their little girl Hailee in early 2009. She was due in August.

But on April 19, Michelle started having strange symptoms and her doctors were baffled until her blood work came back. She had preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. She was 23 weeks and 6 days pregnant, and the medical care providers let her know that she must deliver via emergency c-section or risk the life of her and her unborn baby girl.

Hailee was born weighing only 1 lb, 3 oz and was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, while Michelle continued to struggle for her life. Her blood pressure skyrocketed, she had extreme fluid build-up in her limbs and worst of all, her blood platelet count was dangerously low. Michelle was hospitalized for seven full days as her health care providers struggled to bring her back to health.

On April 29, two days after Michelle was discharged, Michelle and Matt received a terrible midnight call.

“The hospital said they thought it would be best if we came right away,” said Michelle. At 4 am that next morning, Hailee lost her battle. The couple was devastated.

The Taylors could not believe that things could have gone so wrong so fast, and seeking more information, they found the Preeclampsia Foundation and the Atlanta, GA Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. Their team “The Least Speedy Speedsters for Hailee” has been a top team in Atlanta ever since.

“As soon as I found the Promise Walk in Atlanta I knew that I would walk every year if I could from then on,” said Michelle. “We have been involved with the Preeclampsia Foundation ever since.”

As the 2014 Atlanta, GA Promise Walk Mission Family, Michelle and the Taylor family, which includes Matt’s daughter Emilee and new little sister Ellee, will kick off the festivities and share their inspiring story on May 17, 2014, at Lenora Park in Snellville, GA.
